    HOUSTON – Mayor Sylvester Turner is being recognized today with a Distinguished Leadership award by the Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS) at its annual conference. TNOYS, which is dedicated to supporting critical services for Texas youth and their families, is presenting the award in recognition of Turner’s work on behalf of youth during his time in the Texas legislature.

  • LOCAL YOUTH ALLIANCE RECEIVES STATEWIDE AWARD FOR INNOVATION

    HOUSTON – The Community Youth Outreach Alliance, formed by three Montgomery County organizations in 2014, is being recognized today with the Steve Wick Innovative Program Award from Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS). TNOYS, which is dedicated to supporting critical services for young Texans and their families, presented the award at its 33rd annual statewide conference at Houston’s Westin Galleria, in recognition of the contributions that have been made by the three members of the Alliance -- Montgomery County Youth Services, Angel Reach, and CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County.

    HOUSTON – Amarillo resident Yannin Marquez is being recognized here today as statewide Professional Youth Worker of the Year by the Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS) at its annual conference. TNOYS, which is dedicated to supporting critical services for Texas youth and their families, will present (?) the award in recognition of Marquez’s work as a case manager providing behavioral and mental health services to families in the town of Herferd.

    Gendron: State Must Address Youth Homelessness

    The Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs (TDHCA) last month delivered to state lawmakers the findings of Youth Count Texas!, the first-ever statewide count and survey of youth in our state who are experiencing homelessness. Houston was one of 13 communities that participated in the survey, and results indicate that - as can be expected of Texas' most populous city - Houston is home to a large percentage of the state's homeless youth. In recent years, organizations have begun conducting youth counts in cities and states across the U.S. to better measure and understand youth homelessness, but Youth Count Texas! was the first to be conducted on such a large scale in a state as vast as Texas.

    You’ve seen the headlines – more and more Texas children are going without foster care placements and being left to sleep for multiple nights in Child Protective Services offices. Now, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has publicly released data showing that many at-risk children are not being seen by caseworkers when they should be. Last week, several Texas leaders — Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Strauss – responded to these issues and called on DFPS to fix the problems.
