One of our Harris County Transition-Age Youth and Families (TAYF) partners, Communities in Schools of Houston, recently had a “TAY Fun Day.” The goal of the event was to bring together TAY (transition-age youth, ages 14-24 years old) from their different sites and have a day of fun and celebration – all planned with the input of the youth themselves. The young people were given a day to just be young, and it was a chance for high school students to mingle with college students. There was a BBQ, kickball, water balloons, and dancing. The Communities in Schools programs have a special focus on mental health as well as a comprehensive approach to all the services and supports and opportunities a young person needs to make the successful transition to adulthood. They are piloting a youth advisory council to help shape these services and supports.
