Update 10/08: The U.S. Supreme Court is ruling on the 2020 Census deadline, and a ruling is expected 10/10.
There’s still time be counted in the 2020 Census! TNOYS is encouraging all youth services providers to get the word out so that we can ensure an accurate count for Texas.
The 2020 Census has experienced many shifting deadlines over the last few months, and the census deadline has been extended to October 31st as of this writing. An Oct 7th ruling from the 9th circuit court allows for the census count to continue through October. However, there is still a possibility that the decision could be appealed and taken to the Supreme Court to stop the count.
Because the census deadline is still not set in stone, it is critical that we continue to alert youth and families about the census and ask everyone to self-respond TODAY.
The statewide organization Texas Counts has recommended the following when reaching out to communities:
- Urge households to respond today (i.e “Don’t delay, respond today!”)
- Remind communities that it is safe, quick, easy, and urgent to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
- Refrain from using a deadline when reaching out to communities. There is still a possibility that the deadline will change again and we don’t want to cause more confusion.
- Focus messaging on why the Census matters and urgency in completing the Census
