Covenant House Texas (CHT) is a Houston-based nonprofit that has provided housing and support services to youth experiencing homelessness for over 40 years. A longstanding member of the TNOYS network, CHT offers an extensive continuum of care for youth and young adults (YYA), spanning mental health and substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational training, transitional and permanent living programs, and the provision of basic necessities like food, clothing, and medical care.

As needs increase in the Houston area, CHT is leading the way in expanding services, with a highlight being the opening of their new state-of-the-art campus last year. The building features four floors, capacity to accommodate up to 150 youth on a nightly basis, healthcare services, and much more, enabling CHT to serve 50% more YYA aged 18-24.

We had the opportunity to talk to Delesha Jones, Chief Program Officer at Covenant House and TNOYS Board Member, to learn more about the design of this space and how it is supporting CHT’s mission to give youth and young adults a safe haven, absolute respect, unconditional love, and a path to lasting independence. What services and features at the new facility are you especially excited about and why?

We are especially excited about the expanded space and intentional design that allow us to provide more comprehensive, trauma-informed services under one roof. The new facility enhances our ability to offer integrated supports such as mental health counseling, medical care, case management, life-skills training, and education and employment services in a setting that feels welcoming rather than institutional.

It includes an art room, music room, parenting space, resource library, career services center, indoor and outdoor gym, fitness center, chapel, and a state-of-the-art medical clinic. Each of these spaces was designed to address different aspects of a young person’s well-being, including physical, emotional, spiritual, and professional.

Having these services co-located allows youth to access medical care, mental health support, career guidance, creative outlets, and physical wellness opportunities in one welcoming, trauma-informed environment. This holistic approach reduces barriers to care and reinforces our commitment to helping young people not just survive, but truly thrive as they work toward independence.

What are some features that are particularly important for youth experiencing homelessness?

Safety, privacy, and dignity are critical for youth experiencing homelessness, many of whom have experienced trauma or instability. Features such as private or semi-private sleeping areas, calm and well-lit common spaces, and designated areas for counseling and reflection help youth feel secure and respected. Access to basic needs like showers, laundry, and nutritious meals, alongside spaces for learning, creativity, and community building is equally important. These elements send a powerful message that youth are valued and deserve environments that support healing, growth, and self-determination.

As the space was being designed, did you get input from youth? If so, how did you incorporate the voices of young people experiencing or vulnerable to homelessness?

Yes, youth voice was a critical part of the design process. We intentionally sought input from young people through conversations, listening sessions, and informal discussions with young people currently receiving services. Youth shared what made them feel safe, what supports they found most helpful, and what they wished spaces felt like when they were in crisis or beginning to stabilize. Their feedback helped inform decisions around layout, communal versus private spaces, and the overall atmosphere of the facility. By incorporating their lived experiences into the design, we ensured the facility reflects the real needs and aspirations of the youth we serve, creating an environment that feels supportive, empowering, and genuinely youth-centered.
