Motivational Interviewing Skills for CSEY Advocates
- Date: Tuesday, June 4, 2024; 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
In this Pre-Conference Institute, participants will gain a robust introduction to the basics of using Motivational Interviewing. Attendees will enhance their approach to relationships and change as they develop concrete tools that help guide others along a process of possible change. This combination of an approach and skills appears to have utility for all, and yet there is some precision in the possible utility for the most marginalized and vulnerable populations. This Pre-Conference Institute is designed to demonstrate, practice, and move forward with change and growth conversations among advocates of young people who have been traumatized, sexually exploited, or might be vulnerable to exploitation.
Turning Down the Heat: Preventing Conflict & Counter-Aggression
- Date: Tuesday, June 4, 2024; 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
As expected, many youth-serving professionals become irritated by the behavior of select “challenging” youth. When a conflict develops, staff are less likely to perceive accurately, think clearly, and reason coherently. Few professionals are trained to understand and acknowledge these normal counter-aggressive feelings. Though competent staff rarely initiate conflicts with young people, they often keep them alive through their unintended, counter-productive reactions.
Turning Down the Heat documents the most common reasons that youth-serving professionals become counter-aggressive with select youth and offers dozens of targeted intervention skills to more effectively manage conflict in the service environment. Grounded in neuroscience and trauma-informed approaches, this unique training leads to powerful insights that will change the way you think and behave when you are angry.
